The Wine Academy with Chris Griese
Sonoma Part Three: Petaluma Gap and Sonoma Valley
Join local wine expert Chris Griese for a new format of wine education, The Wine Academy. These multi-session educational and tasting seminars will be topical by month, focusing on a particular region in the world of wine. (The classes are independent of one another, meaning you do not need to take part one to attend part two, etc.)
We are kicking off The Wine Academy in January 2019, focusing on Sonoma County.
The final part of the Sonoma County series will focus on two regions representing the oldest wine region of Sonoma, and the newest.
Sonoma Valley AVA, located around the historic town of Sonoma, is where it all began when Buena Vista winery was first founded. Nearby, the northernmost mission of California was established along with the planting of the mission grape. This will be the start of this class and will contain extensive hints and tips of who to visit in the area to get a sense of the history of the region. Key grape varieties, great wineries to visit, and ideas of where to dine will be organized for you.
Then we’ll go deep into the newest AVA in Sonoma County: The Petaluma Gap. This is an amazing region for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and you’ll learn exactly why. There isn’t much Petaluma Gap wine available in Minnesota, but you’ll get to try a couple awesome examples while learning about the terroir of this area.
The class will include extensive handouts, maps, articles, and tips for visiting these regions and having an amazing experience in them.
Chris Griese is one of the most experienced wine experts in Minnesota, having run three key fine wine distributors over his 30+ year career. He has now left the wholesale industry to focus on wine education as well as sake importation for the eastern United States (he’s one of the only WSET Level 3 Sake experts in the country). His presentations are info-packed, lively, and come from a background only possibly with experience. We hope you can join us for the class!
